If you're new here, I'm Amanda Carroll. I'm a dating strategist and former national radio host, and I'm the personal dating coach for women who built a life they're proud of and never got a plan for this part. This Substack is your playbook. One play a week. You study it, you run it, and you stop guessing at the one area of your life you've been running on instinct.
Last week we ran the Fast to Fire Play. You wrote his Scouting Report, marked the tape after every date, and held your Date Five Review. So let's say he passed. He made plans and kept them. He asked about your life and remembered the answers. He told you plainly what he's looking for, and it matches what you want.
Congratulations. Now comes the most dangerous moment in dating, and almost nobody talks about it. It's the moment a smart woman stops vetting and starts hoping. He passed the interview, so in her head he's hired. Full-time, full benefits, keys to the building. And she stops watching the tape right when the tape starts to matter most.
That is not your fault. Nobody ever told you the interview and the job are two different things. In business, even your best hire gets a probation period. Not because you don't trust them, but because five great interviews show you someone on their best day, and the first 30 days show you who they are on a normal Tuesday. So this week, I want you to hire yourself as the CEO of your love life and run the play every great CEO runs after the offer letter: the provisional hire.
Where this play was born
I was divorced at 35 with three kids and a brand-new career in national radio. I was a fighter for love, and I never gave up. But for about ten years I dated the wrong way. When a man passed my (very generous) interview, I gave him the whole job on the spot. No probation. No review. Then I'd spend the next six months finding out who I'd actually hired.
When I changed my strategy, I stopped handing out permanent positions on day one. I stopped swiping on job titles and started choosing an equal partner. At 44 I met Sean on Hinge, on purpose. We're married now with a blended family of seven, and I have never once had to wonder where I stand.
Effort was never the problem. Execution was.
THIS WEEK'S PLAY: THE PROVISIONAL HIRE
Step 1: Make the offer. After date five, if he's earned date six, you offer him the job, provisionally. That means exclusivity for 30 days. You can say it simply: "I've really enjoyed these five dates. I'm not seeing anyone else, and I'd like us to be exclusive and see where this goes. How do you feel about that?" Why exclusive? Because you can't tell whether you really gel with someone while you're both still keeping options open. And here's my rule, plainly: we don't sleep with people who are sleeping with other people. Exclusivity comes first. Always.
Step 2: Keep marking the tape. The Scouting Report doesn't go in a drawer once he's exclusive. For the next 30 days you're watching for the things only time shows you. Does he still plan the dates, or did that stop the day he got the title? Do you hear from him every day? Does he bring you into his life, his friends and his weekends? And how does he handle the first small disagreement? That one tells you more than all five dates combined.
Step 3: Hold the Day-30 Review. At day 30, sit down with yourself (not him) and answer three questions honestly.
Is he honoring his commitment? Not "is he moving toward commitment." He made one when he said yes to exclusivity. Is he keeping it?
Is he showing up like a healthy partner? Is he consistent, kind and respectful, and does he make room for your life? (I teach the four keys I use to vet this inside my programs, because they deserve more than a paragraph.)
Do you feel calmer or more anxious around him? This is the one smart women skip, and it tells you everything. The right man lowers your heart rate. The wrong one has you rereading his texts at 11pm. Anxiety at day 30 doesn't turn into peace at month 30.
If the answers are yes, yes and calmer, congratulations. You made a good hire, and he's off probation. If they aren't, you already know what comes next, and next week I'm giving you the exact list.
Next week: the Never Rehire Play. The firing offenses that end it on the spot even after you're exclusive, the exit interview, and why you never, ever take him back.
Know the role before you make the offer
The provisional hire only works if you know exactly what the job is. You can't review someone against a role you never wrote down. That's what we build at The Game Plan, my free live training. We'll work through the three foundational plays of Clarity, Process and Vetting, you'll build your Green-Light Brief to use on your next date, and I'll show you the full seven-play Playbook.

RUN THE PLAY
If you're dating someone right now, count the days since you went exclusive, and put your Day-30 Review on the calendar. If you're not there yet, write your offer line in your phone today so it's ready when he earns it. Tell me in the comments: what's the one thing you'll be watching for in those 30 days?
Run the Play.
Amanda
P.S. If you're already past day 30 with someone and your answers aren't yes, yes and calmer, come to The Game Plan before you give it "a little more time." It's Monday, October 5, at 12 PM PT / 3 PM ET, and it's free. → SAVE MY FREE SEAT
