If you’re new here, I’m Amanda Carroll. I’m a dating strategist and former national radio host, and I’m the personal dating coach for women who built a life they’re proud of and never got a plan for this part. This Substack is your playbook. One play a week. You study it, you run it, and you stop guessing at the one area of your life you’ve been running on instinct.
You know the one. He’s not bad, exactly. He texts back eventually, he’s fun on a Saturday, and on Date Three he said something about “seeing where this goes” that you’ve been turning over like a coin ever since. So you made a quiet deal with yourself: I’ll give it until the holidays.
It’s late September. “Until the holidays” is three more months with a man you already have questions about, which puts you right back at five months before you know. That isn’t patience. That’s a contract extension for a player who hasn’t produced.
Last week we got in the Five-Date Time Machine and found the clues you missed the first time. This week, we do something about the man in front of you right now. If you want the whole strategy behind this, I’m teaching it free at The Game Plan next Monday, September 28, at 12 PM PT / 3 PM ET.

Why Smart Women Keep the Wrong Man Too Long
In business there’s an old rule: slow to hire, fast to fire. Take your time bringing someone onto the team, and when it’s clearly not working, act. Most smart women date the exact opposite way. We hire fast (chemistry, a great first date, excellent shoulders) and fire slow, sometimes painfully slow.
It’s not because you’re naive. Researchers Hal Arkes and Catherine Blumer found that theater-goers who paid full price for a season subscription showed up to more plays than people who got a discount, whether they were enjoying the shows or not. Once we’ve paid, we keep going to protect what we paid. Every date you’ve already given him feels like a ticket you can’t waste, so you give him another.
And if you never decided what you were looking for, every date comes back “maybe.” Maybe is the most expensive answer in dating, because it rolls over week after week and each one feels like a reason to stay.
THIS WEEK’S PLAY: FAST TO FIRE
Fast to Fire doesn’t mean cold, and it doesn’t mean one strike and he’s out. It means you decide early what he has to show you, you watch for it on purpose, and you let the evidence make the call. Here’s how you run it.
STEP 1: Write His Scouting Report. Before your next date, put three lines in your phone. These are three things a man has to show you by Date Five, and none of them are chemistry. He makes a plan and keeps it. He asks about your life and remembers the answer. He can tell you plainly what he’s looking for.
STEP 2: Mark the Tape. After each date, give every line one mark: shown, not shown, or haven’t seen yet. You’re not grading his personality or your feelings. You’re collecting evidence.
STEP 3: Hold the Date Five Review. If most of your column still says “haven’t seen yet,” that is your answer. A man who wants to build something with you shows you the basics early, because he’s trying to. My client Kendra knew in four dates.
STEP 4: Make the Call. Fast to Fire means you actually say it, kindly and cleanly: “I’ve really enjoyed getting to know you, and I don’t think we’re the right match. I wish you the best.” No fade, and no three more dates just to be polite.
You Already Know How to Do This
Last week my mom needed emergency surgery. I didn’t make a pro-and-con list or give it until the holidays. I knew what mattered, so I got on a plane to Indiana. When you know what matters, decisions get fast. The Scouting Report just helps you know what matters before a man with excellent shoulders makes you forget.
Want to Stop Finding Out in Month Five?
This is exactly what we’re doing at The Game Plan, my free live training. We’ll work through the three foundational plays of Clarity, Process and Vetting, you’ll build your Green-Light Brief to use on your next date, and I’ll show you the full seven-play Playbook.

RUN THE PLAY
Sometime today, open your phone and write three lines. Then take them on your next date. You don’t need until the holidays. You need five dates and a list. Tell me in the comments what’s on yours.
Run the Play.

P.S. If you’ve already given a man a deadline in your head, come to The Game Plan before that deadline arrives. It’s next Monday, 12 PM PT / 3 PM ET, and it’s free.
