If you’re new here — I’m Amanda Carroll. I’m a dating strategist and former national radio host, and I’m the personal dating coach for women who built a career they’re proud of and never got a plan for this part. This Substack is your playbook. One play a week. You study it, you run it, and you stop guessing at the one area of your life you’ve been running on instinct.
Lately I've become a little obsessed with knowing what's actually in our food and where it came from. I'm buying more produce straight from farmers. I'm paying attention to the flour I use, the meat I buy, and how all of it was grown and raised.
And the more I pay attention, the less impressed I am by the front of the package. Natural. Wholesome. Made with real ingredients. High protein. Sounds great. But turn it over. That’s where you find out what you’re actually buying.
And this week I realized: This is exactly how I want you dating. Because a dating profile is packaging.
The Dating Profile Is Designed to Impress You
Open Hinge and you’ll see the dating equivalent of organic, all natural, farm fresh. 😂 Successful. Family-oriented. Emotionally intelligent. Loves to travel. Values communication. Looking for his best friend. Ready for something real. Add some great photos, a good career, a house, a golden retriever and a picture somewhere in Italy and... packaging: 10/10.
None of those things are bad. I want you attracted to him. I want you to care about compatibility, lifestyle, ambition and whether you actually enjoy being around the man. But those things don’t tell you what you most need to know.
Because you’re not choosing a dating profile. You’re choosing the man who may eventually be sitting across from you when life gets hard. The man you might share a home with, make financial decisions with, get sick next to, raise children with, grow older with and depend on when things don’t go according to plan. The qualities that determine what that relationship will feel like rarely fit neatly into a Hinge prompt.
A Two-Word Calendar Invite Reminded Me of This
This week was the anniversary of the day my husband and I got engaged. At the beginning of the week, a calendar invitation from Sean popped up on my phone. Nothing extravagant. Just a Wednesday-night date with two words attached: Engagement Anniversary.
I loved it. Not because we were going somewhere spectacular. There were no rose petals, surprise plane tickets or violinists mysteriously appearing in our kitchen. It was Wednesday. We both had work. 😂 I loved it because he remembered.
He decided it mattered. He put it on the calendar. He made the plan. And I didn’t have to remind him, hint about it or organize the whole thing myself. That little calendar invite wasn’t really evidence that my husband is “romantic.” It was evidence of something much more important: he turns caring into action.
And THAT is something I want you to put on your list.
The #1 Thing I Want You Looking For
We tend to describe the men we date with adjectives: He’s thoughtful. He’s reliable. He’s emotionally mature. He’s generous. He’s serious about me.
But I want you to start challenging those adjectives. He’s thoughtful—what has he actually done that demonstrates thoughtfulness? He’s reliable—what has he consistently followed through on? He’s emotionally mature—what happens when he’s frustrated, disappointed or told no? He cares about me—how does that caring show up in your actual life?
A man can tell you who he is. His dating profile can tell you who he is. And chemistry can make you fill in a LOT of blanks about who you hope he is. But eventually, behavior tells you who he is.
That’s the #1 thing I want you looking for: Does he turn caring into action?
Because caring without action eventually becomes something you have to carry for both of you. And this is where even incredibly smart, successful women can get themselves into trouble. We get impressed by the packaging and start filling in the ingredients ourselves.
Great career becomes responsible. Close with his family becomes emotionally available. Great first date becomes thoughtful. Amazing chemistry becomes compatible. Talking about wanting marriage becomes ready for marriage.
Maybe he is all of those things. But where’s the evidence?
The packaging gets your attention. Character determines what it will actually feel like to build a life with him. And character leaves clues.
THIS WEEK’S PLAY: The Look Beyond the Packaging Play
Here’s how you run it.
Step 1 — Add the line.
Today, open the Notes app on your phone and write your list. You can keep successful, attractive, funny, ambitious, great dad—whatever genuinely matters to you. But put this at the top: Does he turn caring into action?
That’s the one line the packaging can’t answer. His profile can’t answer it. His résumé can’t answer it. Even an incredible first date can’t answer it. Time and behavior will.
Step 2 — Do the count.
If you’re seeing someone right now, get ridiculously practical. How many plans has he made versus how many you’ve made? How many times have you had to remind him about something? How often does he initiate? When he says he’ll call, plan something or take care of something—does it happen? Write the numbers down.
If you’re on the apps, reread your last three conversations. Who moved them forward? Who asked questions? Who followed up? Who suggested actually meeting? This isn’t about playing games or deciding that a man has to initiate every interaction forever. It’s about noticing whether you’re already doing the emotional and logistical work for two people before you’ve even made it to dinner.
Step 3 — Collect, don’t conclude.
This part matters. You are not trying to convict the man. 😂 And you don’t need to decide after Date Two that one forgotten detail means he’s incapable of partnership.
For the next two weeks, treat every interaction as data. Confirmed the plan? Note it. Asked the second question instead of turning the conversation back to himself? Note it. Remembered the thing you told him mattered to you? Note it. Said he would do something and actually did it? Note it. Changed plans and communicated clearly instead of disappearing? Note it.
You’re not deciding yet. You’re reading the label. And over time, patterns become very difficult to argue with.
What Happened to Dana
Dana went back and did the count. In six months, Grant had made exactly two plans. She’d made the rest.
She ended it. Not because he was a bad man. Because he’d spent half a year showing her what was inside, and she’d been grading the front of the package the whole time.
Eight weeks later, she went on a first date with a man whose profile she’d nearly skipped. His photos were fine. His job was fine. Nothing about his profile would have made her list.
But this time she was watching something different. He texted the morning of their date to confirm. He asked about her sister. He’d looked up parking so she wouldn’t have to circle. On Date Three, he brought up something she’d said on Date One that she didn’t even remember saying.
Her voice note to me afterward said it perfectly:
“I almost didn’t swipe. The packaging was a six. What’s inside is a ten.”
She didn’t lower her standards. She changed what she was grading.
And that is the entire point of this Play.
Step 4 — Learn to read what you’re collecting.
This is where dating gets harder, because knowing what to watch for is only half of it. You also need to know what the evidence means. What’s something to keep observing? What’s a genuine red flag? When should you give someone another date? When are you explaining away a pattern because the chemistry is incredible? And how do you stop giving six months to a man whose packaging looked fantastic when the evidence was there in the first six weeks?
That is exactly why I created Dating Reset Training Camp.
You Don’t Need Another Dating App. You Need a Better Way to Date.
For three days—September 15, 16 and 17—we’re going to reset the way you date. Not so you become better at getting men to choose you, but so you become much better at choosing them.
Because most women were never actually taught how to do this. We were taught how to attract him, get the date, what to wear, what to text, how long to wait before responding and how to make ourselves desirable. But who taught you how to evaluate the man sitting across from you?
Who taught you which behaviors actually matter when you’re choosing a life partner? How to tell the difference between chemistry and compatibility? What to ask? What to observe? What deserves another date? What are you explaining away? When should you stay curious—and when have you seen enough?
That’s the reset.
Inside Dating Reset Training Camp, we’re going to get strategic about what you look for, what you may be missing, the patterns that keep costing you time, and how to recognize much earlier whether the man in front of you has the capacity to be the kind of partner you actually want.
Because I don’t want you six months into another relationship saying, But he seemed so great in the beginning.
Of course he did. You were looking at the front of the package. I want to teach you how to turn it over.
Dating Reset Training Camp — September 15–17 | 3 Days | $47
I’m calling it Training Camp for a reason. We’re not spending three days sitting around talking about dating. We’re practicing. You’re going to leave knowing what to look for, what to ask, what to stop explaining away and how to make better decisions about who gets another date—and who doesn’t.
And for $47, if this helps you recognize in three dates what you used to spend six months trying to figure out, I’d say that’s a pretty damn good return on investment.

Run the Play
You don’t have to throw away your old list. You can still want successful, funny, educated, ambitious, handsome and capable of making a dinner reservation. 😂 Just remember: that’s the packaging.
The relationship you’ll eventually live inside is made from what’s underneath it. So this week, look beyond the dating profile. Stop assuming the adjectives are true. Watch what he does. Collect the evidence. Read the label. And keep asking yourself: Does he turn caring into action?
Dana didn’t lower her standards. She changed what she was grading.
I want you to do the same.
That’s The Look Beyond the Packaging Play.
Run it.
